Types of Men’s Colognes
Typically all men’s scents come under the group of colognes except the after shaves. Perfumes and colognes are not much different from each other, because both have the mixture of scented oils and a solvent, generally ethanol. But in colognes the scented oils are far less compared to the perfumes.
They are made on the same principles of a perfume with top, middle and base layers of fragrances like floral, bouquet, wood, leather, chypre and fougere. The top layers are those that are light and fruity or citrus scents and generally disappear within a matter of about 20 to 30 minutes, while the middle layer is stronger and lasts for about an hour or more. The stronger base layer is the long lasting scents in leathers, woods, tobacco, etc.
It is a great challenge for a man to choose a suitable scent as it can be really difficult and overpowering at times. As in women’s perfumes all scents do not smell the same on people. The result of the smell of the cologne is a combination of the reaction of the individual’s body odor and the scent of the used-cologne after it has been sprayed.
There are two basic types of men’s-colognes, the deodorant sprays and the perfume. The deodorants are sprayed directly on to the body while the perfumes are supposed to be used on clothing.
There are a variety of men’s-colognes available in the market and they are differently priced too. Some of the well known brands are quite expensive, but it does not mean that the cheaper ones are not effective.
Many men have skins that are sensitive to the chemicals in the perfumes, but as the chemical content in colognes are minimal it is safer to wear them instead.
The Eau De Parfum are less expensive and are said to last up to three to five hours, while the Eau De Toilette are what the men usually use on a day to day basis. The Eau de Colognes only have 3-5% oils and are said to linger only for a few hours or so.
It would be advisable to use the same brand of products with the same fragrance for your bath and shower gel so that it will help you to retain the fragrance much longer.
